About Phillis Wheatley
Phillis Wheatley was born on May 8, 1753 in Senegal. She is known for her work as a poet and is credited as the first African American woman to be published. Her most famous work is her 1773 poetry collection, “Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral.”
Prior to gaining recognition for her literary talent, Wheatley traveled from West Africa to Massachusetts on a slave ship in 1761. She was sold to a family who not only taught her how to read and write, but also actively encouraged her passion for literature. In 1778, she was emancipated by the Wheatley family.
Despite her achievements, many individuals doubted that Wheatley had authored the poems attributed to her, leading to a court case where she had to defend her authorship.
In terms of family life, Phillis married fellow freed slave John Peters in 1778. The couple faced significant challenges due to poverty and racism. Sadly, just hours after Wheatley’s death at the age of thirty-one, their infant son also passed away. However, she went on to raise two other children.
