About Phan Thi Kim Phuc
Phan Thi Kim Phuc, born on April 6, 1963 in the United States, is famous for her appearance in a world-renowned photograph from the Vietnam War taken in 1972. At nine years old, she was captured running naked and scarred from a napalm strike. Despite surviving this harrowing attack, she went on to lead a relatively normal life as an adult.
Kim Phuc grew up in Trang Bang village which suffered attacks because of its occupation by North Vietnamese forces. She later became a Canadian citizen and shared her story with the world.
In addition to her contributions as an activist and speaker, she also served as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador in 1994 and delivered a speech at the United States Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Veterans Day in 1996. Furthermore, Kim Phuc founded the Kim Phuc Foundation International to provide aid for child victims of war.
During her college years, due to harassment encountered in Vietnam, she left for Cuba where she met her husband Bui Huy Toan – also a Vietnamese student.
