About Parveen Shakir
Parveen Shakir (1952-11-24) was a poet, teacher, and civil servant born in Pakistan. She is best known for her work in the ghazal and free-verse genres, with notable titles including Khushbu, Khud-kalaami, and Inkaar.
Shakir received the Pride of Performance award, Pakistan’s most prestigious literary honor. She attended both the University of Karachi and Harvard University before publishing her first poetry collection at the age of twenty-four.
Tragically, she died in a car accident in 1994. The road where the accident occurred was re-named in her honor. Shakir married Naseer Ali, a doctor; they had a son before divorcing.
