About Pandita Ramabai
Pandita Ramabai (1858-04-23) was an Indian civil rights leader renowned for her advocacy of female education and emancipation. She made significant scholarly contributions to the study of Sanskrit.
As the daughter of prominent scholar Anant Shastri, she received an excellent childhood education and mastered several languages including Sanskrit, Hindustani, Marathi, Bengali, and Kanarese by her early teenage years. In the late 1870s, she was awarded Calcutta University’s prestigious titles of Saraswati and Pandita.
Ramabai’s family life involved delivering lectures alongside her brother in support of women’s education throughout India. In the early 1880s, she married attorney Bipin Behari Medhvi and had a daughter named Manorama Bai.
