About Olga Korbut
Olga Korbut was a Soviet gymnast, born on May 16, 1955, in Grodno, Belarus. She achieved fame by winning Olympic gold medals at the 1972 Munich and the 1976 Montreal Olympic games for the Team, Balance Beam, and Floor Exercise events. Korbut is also known for being the first woman to ever complete a backward release on bars.
Prior to her success as a gymnast, Korbut was trained by Olympic gold medalist Elena Volchetskaya. She made her debut at age 14 at the 1969 USSR competition where she finished fifth.
Korbut’s achievements include four gold medals and two silver medals in gymnastics throughout her Olympic career. Additionally, she has one son named Richard with whom she shares from her marriage to Leonid Bortkevich from 1978 until their divorce in 2000.
