About Odetta
Odetta was a folk and blues singer born on December 31, 1930, in Alabama. Known for her powerful voice and dedication to the rights of African Americans, she is considered the voice of the Civil Rights Movement.
Before fame, Odetta began training as an opera singer at the age of thirteen before going on to join the Hollywood Turnabout Puppet Theatre. One of her most famous songs, “Take This Hammer,” was included in Time’s All-Time 100 Songs list.
Odetta was married three times: first to Gary Shead, then to Don Gordon in 1959, and finally to Louisiana Red in 1977.
