About Nora Marks Dauenhauer
Nora Marks Dauenhauer was a Twentieth-century Alaskan-born poet, best known for her American Book Award-winning work, Russians in Tlingit America. She also wrote The Droning Shaman: Poems by Nora Marks Dauenhauer and Haa Shuka, Our Ancestors: Tlingit Oral Narratives. Before pursuing a successful literary career, she obtained a degree in anthropology and published her first literary work, Egg Boat, in 1983.
Dauenhauer’s works focus on the language and traditions of the aboriginal Tlingit people of Alaska. She was one of sixteen children born to Emma and Willie Marks and grew up as a member of the Tlingit nation in Yakutat, Alaska.
