About Nina Simone
Nina Simone, born Eunice Kathleen Waymon on February 21, 1933 in Tryon, North Carolina, was a prominent jazz singer and civil rights activist. She was also known for her skills as a pianist and arranger across various music genres including blues and jazz. One of her notable performances is her cover of “Strange Fruit.” Her career earned her fifteen Grammy Award nominations.
Prior to gaining fame, Nina Simone took a stand against racial segregation by refusing to perform when her parents were asked to move to the back of one of her concerts to make room for white audience members. Notably, one of her initial hits was her rendition of “I Loves You Porgy.”
In 1958 she married Don Ross but their union ended in divorce in 1960. Later that year she remarried Andrew Stroud with whom she had a daughter named Lisa Celeste Stroud.
