About Newsha Tavakolian
Newsha Tavakolian (born October 13, 1981) is an Iranian photographer known for her international coverage of the Iraq war starting in 2002. She was awarded the fifth laureate of the Carmignac Gestion Photojournalism Award in 2014 and the principal laureate of the Prince Claus Award in 2015. Tavakolian has gained a substantial following, with over 150,000 followers on her newshatavakolian Instagram account.
Before gaining widespread recognition, Tavakolian began her professional career at just sixteen years old, working in the Iranian press at Zan, a women’s daily newspaper. Her work has been displayed in prestigious institutions such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, British Museum, and Boston Museum of Fine Art.
Tavakolia’s personal life had a profound impact when she suffered the loss of her grandmother in October 2016.
