About Nella Larsen
Nella Larsen was an American novelist born on April 13, 1891 in Chicago, Illinois. She was of Danish and African descent and is known for her contributions as a minor figure in the Harlem Renaissance. Larsen achieved recognition in the 1920s with the publication of two novels: Quicksand (1928) and Passing (1929). The latter work is notable for its exploration of the complex intersections of sexual and racial identity.
Before gaining fame as a writer, Larsen graduated from nursing school in 1915 and went on to work at the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama as a nurse. She also worked as a librarian in New York City. Notably, she briefly attended Fisk University in Tennessee.
In 1919, Larsen married physicist Elmer Imes; however, their marriage ended in divorce in 1933.
