About Monica Helms
Monica Helms, born on March 8, 1951 in Sumter, South Carolina, is an activist known for creating the Transgender Pride Flag. Additionally, she founded the Transgender American Veterans Association (TAVA) and made history in 2004 as the first transgender woman to be nominated as a delegate at the Democratic National Convention.
Prior to her activism work, Helms served in the U.S. Navy from 1970 to 1978 and was stationed on submarines USS Francis Scott Keys and USS Flasher. She later graduated from Glendale Community College with a General AA degree and an AA in Industrial Television degree in 1987.
An interesting fact about Helms is that she became the first woman to join the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc., and also enjoys model rocketry. She is married to transgender scientist Darlene Darlington Wagner, Ph.D.
