About Molly Pitcher

Molly Pitcher, born Mary Ludwig on October 13, 1754 in Trenton, New Jersey, was a prominent figure during the American Revolutionary War and is celebrated as a war hero. She earned the moniker “Molly Pitcher” by supplying water to soldiers at the Battle of Monmouth. Some interpretations suggest that “Molly Pitcher” embodies a collective representation of women who contributed similarly during this time.

Prior to her fame, she was born to Maria Margaretha and Johann George Ludwig in Trenton. Soldiers would call out for her assistance with the phrase “Molly! Pitcher!” when they required water.

In 1777, she married William Hays – who worked as a barber- and later wed John McCauley, also an ex-soldier from the Revolutionary War after Hays’ passing in 1793.
