About Mirra Alfassa
Mirra Alfassa, born on February 21, 1878 in France, was a religious leader known for her spiritual collaboration with the renowned yogi Sri Aurobindo. After training under the respected guru, she founded the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and is particularly famous for a posthumously-published multi-volume spiritual journal known as The Agenda (alternate title: Mother’s Agenda).
Before fame, Alfassa showed spiritual and artistic tendencies from a young age. She began having out-of-body experiences at twelve years old and went on to study at Paris’ Ecole des Beaux Arts.
Sri Aurobindo regarded Alfassa as the spirit of the “Mother Divine” and gave her the nickname “The Mother.” Born to a Jewish family of Turkish and Egyptian parentage, she spent her childhood in Paris before marrying Henri Francois Morisset; their marriage resulted in a son named Andre. She later married and divorced Paul Antoine Richard.
