About Melissa De la Cruz
Melissa De La Cruz, born on September 7, 1971 in Manila, Philippines, is a renowned Young Adult Author. She is the creator of several popular young adult book series, like Au Pairs, Blue Bloods, and The Ashleys. Notably, her novel Isle of the Lost served as a prequel to Disney’s Descendants and spent over 50 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list.
Before her literary fame, she pursued studies in art history and English at Columbia University in New York City. Prior to becoming an author, she worked as a fashion and beauty editor for magazines such as Marie Claire, Harper’s Bazaar and Glamour. Interestingly enough, her time at Marie Claire influenced her novel How to Become Famous in Two Weeks or Less.
De La Cruz immigrated with her family from Manila to the United States at the age of 12. Her father worked as an investment banker. She is married to Michael Johnston; together they co-wrote Frozen which launched their Heart of Dread series.
