About Maxine Kumin
Maxine Kumin (born June 6, 1925) is an American poet, fiction writer, and children’s author best known for works such as Still to Mow: Poems and Where I Live: New & Selected Poems. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she served as the United States Poet Laureate from 1981 to 1982.
Before gaining fame, she published her debut poetry collection Halfway in 1961 and subsequently released a children’s book called Follow the Fall and a novel titled Through Dooms of Love. Notably, Kumin won both the Eunice Tietjens Memorial Prize for Poetry and the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry over her career.
After graduating from Radcliffe College, Kumin taught English at Tufts University before marrying Victor Kumin in 1946. The couple raised two daughters together.
