About Mary Tappan Wright

Mary Tappan Wright (born December 4, 1851) was an American novelist known for her portrayal of racially-divided American South in her 1902 novel Aliens. She also wrote The Test in 1904 and a collection called Dead Letters and Other Pieces. Before gaining fame as a writer, she studied at the Auburn Young Ladies’ Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio. Wright often focused on American university culture and set many of her stories in the fictional college town of Dulwich. She came from an influential family, with her father being Eli Todd Tappan, the president of Kenyon College in Ohio. In 1878, she married John Henry Wright.
