About Mary Webb
Mary Webb (1881-03-25) was an English novelist known for her works set in the Shropshire countryside. Her most famous novel, Gone to Earth, inspired a 1950 film of the same name. Other notable works include Precious Bane, The House in Dormer Forest, and The Golden Arrow.
Webb’s literary career began with the publication of her first poem in October 1907. At age twenty, she was afflicted with Graves’ Disease, which greatly influenced the themes and characters of her writing.
In recognition of her literary achievements, she was awarded the Prix Femina Vie Heureuse for her 1924 novel, Precious Bane.
Born in Leighton, Shropshire, England, Webb married Henry Bertram Law Webb in 1912.
