Mary Rudge (born February 6, 1842) was an English chess player known for her pioneering role as one of the first women to compete against top male players in the game. Born in Herefordshire, England, Rudge initially participated in small chess tournaments in her hometown before gaining recognition as a formidable player.
Rudge’s dedication to the sport led her to become the first female member of the Bristol chess Club and achieve the distinction of being crowned as the inaugural winner at the Women’s International chess Congress.
Following her father’s death, Dr. Henry Rudge, Mary intensified her focus on chess, solidifying her status as a trailblazing figure for women in competitive chess.
