Mary Peters is a former British athlete known for her achievements in the shot put and pentathlon events. She was born on July 6, 1939, in Lancashire, England and later moved to Northern Ireland.
Her interest in athletics began during her time at Portadown College in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. In 1966, she competed in her first Commonwealth Games and won a silver medal in the shot put event.
Peters achieved international recognition after winning gold medals in the shot put and pentathlon events at the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland. Her most significant achievement came at the 1972 Summer Olympics where she claimed Olympic Gold and set a world record as a pentathlete.
Following her victory over German athlete Heide Rosendahl at the Munich Olympics, Peters faced death threats from sources potentially linked to the IRA due to her Protestant background.
