Mary Noailles Murfree was a pioneering American novelist born on January 24, 1850, in Tennessee. She is celebrated as the first significant female author of Appalachian literature during the turn-of-the-century. Among her notable works are Down the Ravine and The Prophet of the Great Smoky Mountains, alongside numerous short stories. Prior to gaining literary fame, she pursued education at the Chegary Institute in Philadelphia.
Notably, Murfree adopted the pen name Charles Egbert Craddock for her published works. Her father was a prominent Nashville lawyer and her family’s legacy included having a town in Tennessee named after their ancestor, a Revolutionary War colonel.
