About Mary Eliza Mahoney
Mary Eliza Mahoney, born on May 7, 1845 in Massachusetts, was the first African American professional nurse. She is also known for founding the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses, which later merged with the American Nurses Association. Mahoney was an active women’s suffragist and civil rights activist.
Prior to her nursing career, she worked at the New England Hospital for Women and Children for over a decade. In recognition of her trailblazing achievements, she was inducted into the American Nurses Association Hall of Fame in 1976 and later into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 1993.
Coming from a family of former slaves, Mary Eliza Mahoney was raised in Dorchester, Massachusetts along with her two younger siblings.
