About Mary MacKillop
Mary MacKillop, born on January 15, 1842 in Fitzroy, Australia, was an Australian nun who founded the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart in 1866. The organization established a number of schools throughout Australia.
Prior to her religious work, MacKillop started working at the age of 14 as a clerk in a stationery store in Melbourne to help support her family.
She is notable for being the first Australian to be recognized by the Catholic Church as a saint.
Her brother Donald was a Jesuit priest who worked among the Aborigines in Northern Australia.
