Caresse Crosby, born on April 20, 1891 in New Rochelle, New York, was a prominent socialite and entrepreneur known for her patronage of the arts. She is best remembered for patenting the first widely used brassiere.
Prior to gaining fame as an inventor, Crosby was inspired to create her own garment after she found that the whalebone corsets of the time were visible under her evening dress. This led to the development of what she named the “Backless Brassiere” and subsequently sold her patent to The Warner Brothers Corset Company for $1,500.
Throughout her life, Crosby remained tied to her American roots as a descendant of original American colonists. Her innovative contributions continue to have a lasting impact on fashion and women’s undergarments.
