Mary Hopkin is a Welsh folk singer who was born on May 3, 1950, in Pontardawe, Wales. She gained widespread recognition for her hit single “Those Were the Days” in 1968 which topped the charts in the U.K. Throughout her career, she released albums such as “Earth Song, Ocean Song” in 1971.
Before gaining fame as a singer, Mary Hopkin was recommended to Paul McCartney by British model Twiggy. She subsequently became one of the first artists to sign with the Beatles’ label, Apple Records.
In 1971 she married Tony Visconti but they divorced ten years later.
