About Mary Gaitskill
Mary Gaitskill is an American author of fiction and essays, born on November 11, 1954, in Lexington, Kentucky. She is best known for her 2005 novel “Veronica,” which was a finalist for the National Book Award. One of her short stories also served as the inspiration for the 2002 film “Secretary,” starring actress Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Before gaining fame as a writer, Gaitskill became a born-again Christian at the age of twenty-one but later changed her mind about the conversion. She has received both a Guggenheim Fellowship and a PEN/Faulkner Award nomination during her career.
In 2001, she married writer Peter Trachtenberg; however, they separated nine years later.
