About Mary Ellen Wilson
Mary Ellen Wilson was a child abuse survivor who became known as the first documented case of its kind in the United States. Born on March 1, 1864, in New York, she was abused by her foster parents, Francis and Mary Connolly. In 1874, her case was heard at the New York State Supreme Court, leading to the creation of the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
Before fame, at age two, she was turned over to the New York City Department of Charities. A jury convicted Mrs. Connolly of assault and battery and she was sentenced to one year in prison. She was later placed in a juvenile home before Methodist missionary Etta Wheeler and her relatives got custody of her.
In family life, at 24 years old Mary Ellen Wilson married Lewis Schutt, a widower with three children. They had daughters named Etta and Florence and adopted an orphan named Eunice.
