About Mary Colter
Mary Colter (April 4, 1869 – January 8,1958) was an American architect known for her work in the Pueblo Deco style. Born in Pennsylvania, she is celebrated for designing several iconic hotels and lodges across the southwestern United States, including the Hopi House, Hermit’s Rest, Lookout Studio observatory and four Mary Jane Colter Buildings.
Colter began her career after attending San Francisco’s California School of Design and joining the Fred Harvey Company as an interior designer. Her first project involved decorating the Alvarado Hotel in Albuquerque. Throughout her life, she considered La Posada Hotel in Arizona to be her masterpiece.
She drew inspiration from traveling with her family through frontier Minnesota, Texas, and Colorado during her childhood. Following her father’s passing in 1886,
