About Mary Cassatt

Mary Cassatt was an Impressionist artist born on May 22, 1844, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is best known for her motherhood-themed paintings such as “The Child’s Bath,” “Maternite,” and “Two Women Throwing Flowers During Carnival.”

Before gaining fame as a painter, Cassatt traveled extensively in Europe as a child and lived in France during the early years of her adulthood. In 1866, she enrolled in a painting class taught by the renowned Charles Joseph Chaplin. Her first painting to be chosen by the Paris Salon was “A Mandoline Player” in 1868.

During the 1890s, Cassatt was most prolific and began mentoring up-and-coming American artists such as Lucy A. Bacon. Notably, she painted “Modern Woman” for the Women’s Building at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition.

Cassatt came from an upper-middle-class family in Pennsylvania and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Despite her focus on depicting mother-child relationships in her art, she never married or had children.
