About Mary Anning
Mary Anning (May 21, 1799) was a renowned English paleontologist known for her groundbreaking discoveries in the field. She gained recognition for unearthing the first Ichthyosaur and Plesiosaurus fossils.
As a child, Anning survived a lightning strike that claimed the lives of three women while she was being held by a neighbor. Although soaking her in hot bathwater saved her from serious injury, this incident left an indelible mark on her early life.
Anning’s parents, Richard and Mary, endured multiple losses as several of their children passed away at young ages. Only Mary and Joseph managed to survive into adulthood out of their ten siblings.
Anning eventually made significant contributions to the natural sciences but struggled due to societal barriers against women in academia during her time. She was posthumously honored by the Royal Society as one of the top ten British women who have most influenced the history of science, 163 years after her passing.
