She was born in Minnesota and grew up in a wealthy white neighborhood. Marvel played a crucial role in setting up a local chapter of the Newspaper Guild, an organization for newspaper journalists.
Cooke was born to Madison and Amy Wood Jackson and later married Cecil Cooke.
