About Martha Henry
Martha Henry (born February 17, 1938) is an American-born Canadian stage actress widely known as the First Lady of Canadian theatre. Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, she graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) in Pittsburgh before relocating to Canada. In 1970, she obtained Canadian citizenship.
Henry’s career was highlighted by acclaimed performances in significant roles such as Mary Tyrone in Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night and Beatrice in William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Notably, her final performance was in Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women shortly before her passing.
Beyond her professional achievements, Martha Henry experienced personal milestones including three marriages and eventually obtaining Canadian citizenship. Her second husband was actor Douglas Rain, recognized for voicing HAL in the iconic science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey; together they had a daughter named Emma.
