Martha Graham (born May 11, 1894 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) was an influential dancer and choreographer known for her groundbreaking contributions to modern dance. She is best remembered as the founder of the Martha Graham Dance Company and for her esteemed seven-decade-long career.
Graham began her journey in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before training at the Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts in the early 1900s. Over the course of her career, she received numerous accolades including the 1979 Kennedy Center Honor, the 1976 Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the 1985 National Medal of Arts. Notably, she also achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first dancer to perform at the White House.
Coming from a Presbyterian family with Irish roots, Graham’s personal life included a marriage to fellow dancer Erick Hawkins from 1948 until 1954.
