Marlene Dietrich was a German actress born on December 27, 1901 in Schoneberg, Germany. She became famous for her performances both on stage and on screen. Her most notable work includes starring roles in 1930s dramas such as The Blue Angel, Shanghai Express, and Desire. In fact, she was ranked 9th on The American Film Institute’s 1999 list of the Greatest Female Stars of All Time.
Prior to her fame, Dietrich started her acting career as a chorus girl in vaudeville and theater acts. She also had a prominent presence in Hollywood during the onset of World War II when members of the Nazi Party asked her to return to Germany but she refused, openly expressing her hatred for Nazism. In 1939, she became an American citizen and actively supported the war effort by touring the U.S. from 1942 to 1943 to collect war bonds.
Dietrich was married to Rudolf Sieber from 1923 until his death in 1976. Recognized for being openly bisexual at a time when it was uncommon, she had numerous affairs with both men and women throughout her life. She gave birth to her only child Maria in December of 1924.
