About Mariya Takeuchi
Mariya Takeuchi (born March 20, 1955) is a Japanese pop singer known for her prolific career in the city pop music genre. Over the span of several decades, she has become one of Japan’s best-selling artists, with over 15 million records sold.
Before embarking on her music career, Takeuchi studied at Keio University and signed with RCA as her first recording label in 1978. Throughout her career, she has released numerous successful albums and singles.
One of Takeuchi’s most notable works is her 1984 single “Plastic Love,” which gained widespread recognition after being restored and released on YouTube in 2017. The song has since amassed more than 40 million views.
In addition to “Plastic Love,” Takeuchi achieved significant success with her 1992 album Quiet Life, which went triple platinum with over a million records sold and reached number one on the Japanese music charts.
Takeuchi’s husband and long-time collaborator is Tatsuro Yamashita. Together, they have one daughter.
