About Marion Bauer
Marion Eugénie Bauer (August 15, 1882 – August 9, 1955) was an American composer, musician, teacher, writer, and music critic. Born in Washington as the youngest of seven children to Jacques Bauer and Julie Bauer née Voisin. Despite never completing a college degree she studied music for many years before being hired by New York University in 1926 as the first female member of the music faculty.
Bauer played an active role in shaping the American musical identity of the 20th century and is noted for her composition “Patterns,” which showcased her use of serialism. She also gained fame for her impressionistic work “Three Impressions” from 1917.
In addition to her career as a composer and educator, Marion Bauer found success as a writer and critic within the field of music. In later life she used part of her inheritance from her mother’s death to study in Europe continuing expanding on both skills as well roles IBM outlets
