About Marie Elizabeth Zakrzewska
Marie Elizabeth Zakrzewska was a pioneering female physician born on September 6, 1829 in Germany. She is best known for establishing the New England Hospital for Women and Children in the United States.
Despite facing several rejections, Zakrzewska was eventually accepted to Royal Charite Hospital’s midwifery school in Berlin, becoming the youngest woman to attend the school. Upon arriving in New York in 1854, she was introduced to Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell and invited to join the staff at Blackwell’s dispensary.
Zakrzewska’s interest in medicine was sparked by her mother, who worked as a midwife.
