About Marie Tussaud

Marie Tussaud was a renowned sculptor, best known for her lifelike wax sculptures. Born on December 1, 1761 in France, she gained fame for establishing the original Madame Tussauds wax museum in London, England during the 1830s. Some of her famous works include a wax statue of Benjamin Franklin and death masks of guillotined French historical figures like Robespierre, Marie Antoinette, and Louis XVI.

Tussaud learned the art of wax sculpting from Philippe Curtius, a French doctor and artist who employed her mother as a housekeeper. Her first wax work was a sculpture of French writer and philosopher Voltaire in the late 1770s. She also has an interesting history during the Reign of Terror in France when she was arrested alongside Josephine de Beauharnais (the wife of Napoleon Bonaparte). Despite facing execution by guillotine, she was pardoned shortly before her scheduled execution.

Born in France but raised in Switzerland, Tussaud eventually settled in London with her sons Joseph and Francois after returning to her native country during the turbulent period of the French Revolution.
