About Marie Taglioni
Marie Taglioni, born on April 23, 1804 in Sweden, was a prominent dancer known for her significant contribution to the European romantic ballet movement of the 19th century. She performed at renowned venues such as Her Majesty’s Theatre in London, the Paris Opera Ballet, and the Saint Petersburg Imperial Ballet.
Rising to fame in her late twenties with her acclaimed performance in La Sylphide (a ballet created for her by her father and choreographer Filippo Taglioni), Marie Taglioni is remembered as an influential figure in the history of ballet.
She garnered attention not only for her exceptional dancing skills but also caused controversy by wearing shorter-than-customary dance skirts to better demonstrate her skill en pointe.
Born into a family deeply rooted in performing arts, she was preceded by famed parents Sophie Karsten and Filippo Taglioni – both accomplished dancers. Her brother Paul Taglioni also had a notable career as a dancer and choreographer. Furthermore, Marie’s grandparents were opera singers which further emphasized their strong ties to performing arts.
