About Marie Equi
Marie Equi was born on April 7, 1872 in Massachusetts. She was a pioneering medical doctor, as well as a prominent anarchist and advocate for women’s access to contraception.
Equi made history by being one of the first women to attend medical school. She gained recognition from the government for organizing a medical relief mission to San Francisco following the devastating 1906 earthquake.
Equi’s outspoken nature frequently landed her in trouble. Her criticisms during World War I led to a sedition charge and ultimately a one-year prison sentence at San Quentin.
Although never married, she lived with her companion Bess Holcomb in what was commonly referred to as a “Boston marriage.”
