Born on April 9, 1827 in Massachusetts, she gained fame for her bestselling novel “The Lamplighter,” published in 1854. Other notable works by Cummins include “Haunted Hearts,” “Around Mull,” and “Mabel Vaughan.” Before beginning her writing career, she attended Mrs. Charles Sedgwick’s Young Ladies’ School in Lenox, Massachusetts.
