About Maria Aitken
Maria Aitken is an Irish-born English theatre director, actress, and writer. She was born on September 12, 1945, in Ireland. Aitken’s notable achievement includes her Tony Award-winning play “The 39 Steps,” which ran for three years on Broadway. Before pursuing a career in the arts, she obtained an M.A. in English Literature from St. Anne’s College at Oxford University.
Aitken has also made significant contributions to prestigious acting institutions such as the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Notably, she received a BAFTA award nomination for her role in the film “A Fish Called Wanda.”
In 1991, Aitken married novelist Patrick McGrath with whom she shares a son named Jack from a previous marriage.
