About Mara Brock Akil
Mara Brock Akil was born on May 27, 1970, in Los Angeles, California. She is a prominent screenwriter known for her work on the series Girlfriends, for which she received NAACP Image and BET Comedy Awards. Akil has also written episodes for shows such as South Central, Moesha, and The Jamie Foxx Show.
Before gaining recognition in television writing, she attended Raytown South High School in Missouri and then went on to earn a degree in journalism from Northwestern University in Illinois.
In addition to her success with Girlfriends, Akil joined the production and writing teams of ABC’s Cougar Town beginning in 2009.
She was raised in Kansas City despite being born in Los Angeles and grew up in a Muslim family. Mara Brock Akil later married Sufi Muslim director Salim Akil. Together they have two sons named Yasin and Nasir who were born in 2007 and 2009 respectively.
