Maria Belon, born on May 12, 1966 in Madrid, Spain, is a Spanish physician and motivational speaker. She is best known for surviving the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami while vacationing in Thailand. Her remarkable story was later depicted in the popular 2012 film The Impossible.
Prior to her harrowing experience, Belon worked as a doctor in Spain before embarking on her fateful trip to Thailand. While relaxing poolside with her family, they were separated by the devastating tsunami. After reuniting with her son Lucas,
Belon gained further recognition when she served as the Spotlight Guest Speaker at the Share Iuvare Business Convention in 2015 and spoke at the World Business Forum that same year. She was born and raised in Madrid and married Enrique Alvarez; together they have three sons: Lucas, Simon, and Tomas.
