About Mamphela Ramphele
Mamphela Ramphele (born December 28, 1947) is a South African politician, doctor and anti-apartheid activist. She is best known as the founder of the political party Agang South Africa and has also served as Vice-Chancellor at the University of Cape Town.
Before her notable career in politics and academia, Ramphele studied at both the University of the North and the University of Natal Medical School. In addition to her academic achievements, she previously worked as Managing Director at the World Bank.
Ramphele’s parents were both teachers – her mother Rangoato and father Pitsi. She had two children with activist Steve Biko.
