About Lydia Thompson
Lydia Thompson was an English dancer and entertainer born on February 19, 1838, in England. She is best known for her famous Victorian-era burlesque troupe British Blondes as well as acclaimed performances in theatrical productions such as Bluebeard, The Lady of Lyons, and Piff-Paff.
Thompson began her professional dancing career at the age of fourteen as a member of the ballet company at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End. Early in her career, she played male roles in a number of burlesque shows, including The White Fawn and Perdita.
Her first marriage was to John Tilbury, with whom she had a daughter named Zeffie. Following Tilbury’s death in a horse racing accident, she married theater manager Alexander Henderson.
