About Lydia Maria Child
Lydia Maria Child (1802-02-11) was an American abolitionist, women’s rights activist, and writer. Born in Medford, Massachusetts, she is most famous for her poem “Over the River and Through the Wood,” a popular Thanksgiving classic. Her published works also include The Girl’s Own Book and The Mother’s Book.
Prior to achieving fame as an author, Child published a work in 1833 advocating for the immediate emancipation of slaves in America. She also fought for Native American rights.
Child was the sister of Convers Francis, a prominent Unitarian minister. In 1828, she married Boston lawyer David Lee Child.
