Lucy Hobbs Taylor (1833-03-14) was a pioneering figure in the field of dentistry and women’s rights activism. She made history as the first female doctoral graduate of a dental school, earning her degree from the Ohio College of Dental Surgery in the mid-1860s.
Following this achievement, she went on to practice dentistry in various states including Ohio, Iowa, Illinois, and Kansas. After retiring from her dental career, Taylor became an advocate for women’s rights.
Prior to pursuing dentistry as a profession, Taylor worked as a schoolteacher in Michigan. Her marriage to James M. Taylor marked the beginning of their joint dental practice in Lawrence, Kansas.
Taylor’s significant contributions were honored by the American Association of Women Dentists with an award established in her name.
