About Lucy Maud Montgomery
Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-11-30) was a Canadian novelist best known for the classic Anne of Green Gables novels, published between 1908 and 1921. She also authored the Emily of New Moon trilogy and The Story Girl books, in addition to being a prolific short story writer with her popular 1912 collection, Chronicles of Avonlea.
Born in Canada, Montgomery grew up in a strict household and often found solace in imagination due to having few friends during her childhood. She later obtained a teaching degree from Prince of Wales College.
The eight novels in her Anne of Green Gables series are set on Prince Edward Island where she lived, following the growth of protagonist Anne Shirley from an outspoken orphan girl to the intelligent wife of Gilbert Blythe. Montgomery’s own life had its share of tragedy; her mother died when she was an infant, causing her to be raised by various family members including her paternal grandparents and father with his second wife before marrying Ewan Macdonald and having three sons.
