About Lucy Craft Laney
Lucy Craft Laney was born on April 13, 1854 in Macon, Georgia. She is best known for her work as a teacher and for opening the first grade school for African-American children in 1883. She later went on to establish a nursing school and a kindergarten for African-American students.
Despite laws that prohibited African-Americans from becoming literate, Laney began reading at the age of four. She later attended teacher training courses at Atlanta University. Raised in the Presbyterian faith, she came from a large family of ten siblings who were born in Macon, Georgia to former slaves David and Louisa Laney.
