About Louise Thaden
Louise Thaden, born on November 12, 1905 in Arkansas, was an American pilot known for setting numerous altitude and endurance records and for winning the prestigious Bendix trophy. Prior to her aviation career, Thaden worked as a sales representative with a Kansas air travel company where she had the opportunity to take free flying lessons.
She made history by winning the Bendix Transcontinental Air Race of 1936, earning $4,500 for her first-place finish and an additional $2,500 for being the first woman to win the race. Thaden’s husband, Herbert von Thaden – also a pilot and engineer – played a crucial role in helping her design record-breaking planes.
